Sade was born Helen Folasade Adu on January 16, 1959, in Ibadan, Nigeria. Her father was a Nigerian economist and her mother was a British nurse. Sade's parents divorced when she was four years old, and she moved to England with her mother and brother. She attended St. Martin's School of Art in London, where she studied fashion design.

In 1980, Sade met Stuart Matthewman, a saxophonist, at a nightclub. They began dating and soon formed a band together, along with Andrew Hale (keyboards),Paul Denman (bass),and Dave Hill (drums). The band was originally called Pride, but they changed their name to Sade in 1984.
